  • State of the Heart Hospice was a pioneer in the hospice movement in the United States. The agency was the first rural-based hospice in the United States serving an all rural population. The agency remains a pioneer by providing new, comprehensive services to patients and families.
  • State of the Heart has served over 11,000 patients in the agency’s history of over a quarter of a century of service.
  • Approximately 100 patients are cared for on a daily basis.
  • State of the Heart cares for families and patients in western Ohio and eastern Indiana. Boundaries are flexible.
  • As a non-profit, locally-based agency, State of the Heart devotes funds to patient care and expansion of programs and services for our communities.
  • Grief support is an important part of hospice care. Grief support is offered to patient families and to anyone in the community who is grieving the loss of a loved one. There is no charge for bereavement support. Several grief support sessions are held throughout the year for both adults and for children.
  • Camp BEARable is a camp for children designed to help youth deal with grief and loss issues. The annual camp has grown each year with about 50 youth in attendance in 2007. It is free to participants and is held at the Spiritual Center at Maria Stein. Camp is supported by donations.
  • The youth who attend the camp have experienced the loss of a loved one and need help dealing with their feelings of grief and loss. Approximately 95 percent of the youth attending camp have had no association with hospice. Their loved one was not under the care of the hospice team. The large number of youth attending camp with no hospice association is an indication that State of the Heart Hospice is seen increasingly as the community’s resource for those dealing with grief and loss.
  • While State of the Heart focuses on quality, compassionate care, the agency realizes the importance of operating in a business-like fashion. The agency has received three “Business of the Year” awards from local communities. The agency is praised for its “efficiency and community accountability, and for its ongoing commitment to providing quality hospice care to all those who need such support.”
  • As a non-profit agency, State of the Heart Hospice relies on community financial support to help with program and service expenses.
  • State of the Heart has a Speakers Bureau and can attend club, civic groups and churches to explain more about hospice care and how families and patients can access the unique services provided.
